Southwest Airlines Job Description The Ramp Agent is responsible for providing friendly service to customers and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external customers. They work in a cooperative spirit to ensure the success of the company. Ramp agents load, unload, service, guide, and direct Company aircraft, receiving and recording customer baggage, air freight, mail, and company materials. Ramp agents handle all aspects of loading, stowing, and unloading baggage, cargo airmail, air freight, ballast, and company materials according to a predetermined plan. Ramp agents also pick up, deliver, and transport cargo and baggage to and from aircraft, preparing records and ensuring customer safety. The Ramp Agent also warehouses, weighs, stacks, picks up, and delivers air cargo, checks air cargo handled against accompanying forms, and corrects routine errors. Ramp agents also safeguard customers' baggage, air cargo, air mail, and COMAT from weather, loss, theft, damage, and destruction. Ramp agents use jetway stairs frequently to carry items checked at the gate to the aircraft bin, review cargo forms for accuracy, perform interior aircraft cabin cleaning by hand, clean lavatories, operate lavatory carts, and perform duties as a Provisioning Agent. Transport cabin and cleaning equipment between aircraft storage areas and operate motorized equipment. Ramp Agent provides friendly service to co-workers and customers, has routine contact with people outside the company Duties vary by size and organization of the station, and may perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders. Pay and Benefits The pay for this position is $17.00 per hour, with the potential for future increases based on the collective bargaining agreement wage scale. Benefits include free fly on open seats on all Southwest flights, a 9.3% 401(k) match, and the potential for annual profit-sharing contributions towards retirement. The pay amount does not guarantee employment, and 401(k) match and profit-sharing contributions are subject to the plan's vesting schedule and IRS limits. Job Requirements No education or experience required A valid state motor vehicle operator's license, obtaining a SIDA badge, and meeting local airport requirements. Additionally, obtaining and maintaining USPS Clearance is required for handling US mail. The ideal candidate should be able to work well with others, work under stressful situations, and complete the Ramp Agent training program. Ramp Agents must be aware of hazardous situations and handle emergencies as needed. Must work under tight time constraints and meet grooming standards, be alert to moving vehicles or aircraft, and communicate information verbally and/or via radio equipment. Must also be able to lift and move items of 70 pounds or more regularly, climb, bend, kneel, crawl, and stoop frequently, work in cramped or high places, and carry heavy items up and down jetway stairs. Must wear prescribed uniforms and maintain a well-groomed appearance per company appearance standards. The ideal candidate must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States, be at least 18 years old, comply with company attendance standards, and be able to work shift work and overtime.
